Our Therapy

Horses demand a degree of mindfulness when in their presence, it is this involvement that supports the experiential component of the therapy offered at Wolfenden Healing.

The outcome of this mindful process of being tuned into the horse, is described by some as the mind becoming relaxed, still, calm, light, empty, or ‘so nice’. Each experience with a horse is unique, and the way in which people connect with a horse can differ. For some it may be from a distance or over a fence if this is what they are comfortable with, for others it may be leading or grooming a horse or doing other groundwork activities. (Unfortunately, this program does not offer riding).

Horse interaction is followed up with conversation in a non-clinical setting. Approaching counselling from a relaxed state, surrounded by nature, can assist people to feel a little more comfortable than they may do in some traditional clinic settings. This supports their human dignity and rights; may assist in removing some barriers to participation, and enhance a sense of wellbeing.  Reflecting on experiential learning gained while interacting with the horse underpins the counselling offered, and facilitates engagement.

The individual is considered the expert of their own life, including any health condition or disability they experience. They are supported to explore for, and work towards, their desired goals or outcomes.

At Wolfenden Healing we are guided by Social Work Principals and Ethics, but offer horse interaction as a tool to enhance participation in counselling.
